Raingutter Regatta

October 29, 2022 at 2:00 PM at CCUMC Playground

Note the change in date/time no thanks to Hurricane Ian!

Please RSVP in Scoutbook. All new members should have received an email from scoutbook.scouting.org with account information.

Race your catamaran down a 10 foot raingutter filled with water. This race is totally scout-powered: you construct the boat, decorate it, and provide the wind (with an air pump)!

We give out lots of design awards: Most Patriotic, Most Original, Most Unusual, Best Workmanship and more!

REMEMBER: A Scout is Trustworthy. A Scout follows the rules. A Scout is Loyal. A Scout encourages everyone in their den and pack to do their best.

CONSTRUCTION RULES: Follow the instructions in the boat kit. This is easy!!

a. Hull: Overall no longer than 7” nor shorter than 6 ½” nor wider than 6”

b. Mast: At least 6 ½” from deck to top

c. Sail: No larger than the supplied sail. The sail may be trimmed if desired.

d. All pieces from the kit must be used (two hulls, plastic hull, mast, and sail)

e. Additional parts, decals, paint, and glue are permitted, but any extra parts must be secured to the boat so they do not fall off during a race. Use waterproof paint!

CONSTRUCTION AND DECORATION SUGGESTIONS:

1. Sails: Glue the sail to the mast. A sail that turns around during the race will not be effective. If desired, the sail may also be glued to the deck. Cone-shaped sails can be very effective.

2. You can waterproof the balsa wood hulls with polyurethane, but it isn't necessary. Don't use water soluble paint unless you seal it, as it will dissolve during the race.

3. The plastic hull may be colored with permanent makers or painted.

4. The sail can be decorated with stickers, markers, etc. Have fun!

There will be design awards!

How the Race Works:

Prizes are awarded for the fastest boats and for design. The course is made from two straight 10 foot long raingutters supported on tables and filled with water. One boat races in each gutter. Two scouts will race each other at a time. Each Den competition will be double elimination, so each Scout will race at least twice.

1. When their names are called, Scouts place their boats into the raingutter with the back of the boat touching the end and hold the boat in place with one hand.

2. When the starter says go, the scouts will propel the boats with a hand air pump

3. If a boat falls over, the Scout may right it in place, but not advance it by hand.

4. A judge will determine the winner. In case of a tie or problem, the judge may call for a race to be rerun.

5. Before and after the races, Scouts must have their boats on the design table to be eligible for design awards.
